The Playing Field Has Reset

For years, experience was a moat. Now, it's less of one.

No one has 20 years of AI experience. That means the advantage senior leaders relied on — tenure, pattern recognition, "I've seen this before" — is weaker in this domain.

This creates three types of executives: AI-native (building, experimenting, pushing boundaries), AI-curious (learning, testing, but not fully embedded), and AI-avoiders (waiting, delegating, or dismissing).

The risk is staying behind while others compound fast.

Executive Insight: The leaders who win aren't the ones who understand AI theoretically. They're the ones who can challenge their teams with it.

"I Use ChatGPT" Is No Longer a Signal

A year ago, that answer worked. Today, it's a red flag.

Executives saying they "play around with AI" are signaling surface-level engagement. Meanwhile, others are building internal tools, prototyping products, and redesigning workflows.

The gap is widening quickly. The expectation now: you've built something (even small), you've tested real use cases, and you understand where AI breaks. Because that's what allows you to push your team beyond default thinking.

Executive Insight: AI fluency is becoming a leadership competency.

AI Raises the Bar on What Actually Matters

AI makes execution cheaper, which makes judgment more valuable.

Across industries, the pattern is the same: AI accelerates ideation, prototyping, and iteration. But it struggles with originality, taste, and decision-making.

In gaming, product, and design-heavy environments, this is already visible. AI can generate options. It can't consistently identify what's worth building. That's now the differentiator.

Executive Insight: If AI can do 80% of the work, your value is in the 20% it can't: taste, clarity, and decision-making under uncertainty.

Hiring Hasn't Changed Where It Matters Most

Despite all the noise, executive hiring hasn't been fully disrupted.

The fundamentals still win: track record, referencing, and judgment in conversation. AI hasn't replaced that. What changed is everything around it — sourcing at scale, outreach automation, interview note-taking and synthesis.

But here's where companies get it wrong. They over-automate the wrong parts. At scale hiring levels, AI-driven outreach works to a point. At the executive level, it often backfires. Low-quality messaging dressed up as personalization still feels generic. And top candidates can tell instantly.

Executive Insight: AI should support executive hiring, not replace the human effort where it matters most.

Executives Are Becoming More Tactical

One of the clearest shifts: leaders are moving closer to the work. Smaller teams. Fewer layers. Faster cycles.

Executives are closer to product decisions, closer to data, and less focused on managing large organizational structures.

This isn't necessarily permanent, but it's real right now. The "player-coach" model is back. And AI is accelerating it. Because when execution speeds up, the distance from the work becomes a liability.

Executive Insight: Strategic thinking still matters, but it's no longer enough on its own.

The Real Shift

AI isn't replacing executives. It's exposing them.

Exposing who can learn fast, who can adapt their thinking, and who can operate without relying on past playbooks.

And in hiring, it's doing the same thing: it's making it easier to move fast, but harder to fake depth.

The leaders who stand out will be the ones who know when not to trust it.
